Making a quilt pattern the second time – almost the same!

Posted on January 9, 2026January 16, 2026

A few years ago I made a quilt and just this past year I made that quilt again but with some modifications.

The first time I made this quilt, back in 2023, I used darker squares from my 2.5″ box of squares and a light beige background to make this quilt. The inspiration for the quilt was a picture/quilt on the Wedding Dress Blue Blog years ago. Unfortunately, I didn’t make good notes about where I found my inspiration. I looked through quite a years of blog entries and wasn’t able to find what i was looking for.

The following year I realised my 2″ square scrap box was overflowing with light but not white squares. I decided to make them into 9 patches. Then, I remembered the quilt I had made the prior year and realised decided that I would make a similar quilt, by swapping out the 4-patches for 9-patches. This time though I knew I would need a darker background colour, so I held auditions!

After some thought, I decided I liked the dark burgundy background the best. The blues though, were a close second and third.

In retrospect a small border would have finished this quilt nicely. I’d definitely make a version of this quilt again. Maybe sooner rather than later as my 2″ and 2.5″ scrap bins are overflowing once again!

I always go back to designs that worked the first time also. By changing up the colours or values and altering it just a bit, you get a totally different looking result that is equally as pleasing as the first.

What a lovely quilt! I love that it came from your “precut” two inch squares! What a great way to use what you had on hand! Well done!

When I first started quilting log cabin blocks were my go to. I was fascinated by how many layouts are possible. Working in a series, such as repeating a pattern, teaches so many lessons. It’s never boring to the viewer or the maker, because each change results in a total different look, despite the common pattern. Great choice to go with the burgundy.

I love both! What a great idea to change the blocks a bit, your new version is beautiful. The burgundy is also my favorite 😉 Thank you for sharing this pretty finish and linking up with P&Q!

I like both versions. These are very pretty quilts and a great way to use up scraps of fabric.

They are both great quilts but I really like how you swapped the four-patch and nine-patch blocks out! Love the burgundy background too! Thanks for sharing with us at Monday Musings. Have a great week.

Gosh I think all the backgrounds you liked would have looked great with this! What a lovely way to use up light colored squares. Thanks for sharing on my weekly show and tell, Wednesday Wait Loss. https://www.inquiringquilter.com/questions/2026/01/14/wednesday-wait-loss-467
