My Jewel Box Baby Quilt is Finally Finished!

Posted on January 2, 2026January 9, 2026

My jewel box baby quilt is finally finished! It will make a lovely gift the next time I need a quilt for a baby girl.

This started off as quilt guild project a few years ago. I made the top quickly then it languished in the pile of flimsies that needed finishing for a few years. It seems most of my quilt tops do this! A few months ago I got it ready for quilting. During the holidays, I quilted it, thanks to being off work on vacation for a couple of weeks.

I didn’t enjoy quilting it. The background white fabric with the light grey print had a weird texture that made it sticky (for lack of a better word) and it was difficult to quilt. I didn’t wash the fabric before sewing with it and I wonder if that was part of the problem. I’m going to wash any leftover white fabric, and if it’s still hard to work I’ll either will either toss it or donate it to the thrift store. I’m not into using material that makes the quilting process harder than it is already.

Here is a picture showing the quilt backing. I’m very happy how the binding complements both the quilt front and back.

I love this one! You did a great job with the variety of colors for the scraps, and the binding and backing are great. I’ve been better about not holding on to fabric I dislike after finding a creative reuse store that accepts donations, although thrift stores will definitely find the fabric a new home as well. Have a great new year!

Hi! We’ve missed you at Wednesday Wait Loss. So lovely to see you back. Your Jewel Box quilt is wonderful. You did a great job quilting it despite the difficulties. I had a fabric like that once–a white fabric with light grey sparkles. I think it was supposed to be snow? I had some trouble with it too but did find ways to use it up. Hopefully you’ll either like it better after washing or can easily rehouse it somewhere. Don’t let that experience turn you off quilting though! Typically machine quilting goes much easier than that. Thanks for sharing on my weekly show and tell, Wednesday Wait Loss.

Your Jewel Box Baby Quilt is a beautiful finish! It’s sure to be loved by the owners when you gift it. That’s awful that you found you had sticky fabric. It really doesn’t make quilting easier when that happens. Thank you for sharing your happy finish on To Do Tuesday. Hope you’ve had another lovely week this week.
