Back around the year 2000 I took two quilt classes through the Toronto Board of Education. Thanks to the first class that I took with them, my very first quilt was mad. It was a jewel box pattern, and this was the resulting quilt. I finished it either during the class or shortly after the class ended:
Yes even then I did scrappy. Even hough I had to buy lots of fabric for it! So started the stash and my love of fabric…
The second class I attended was a sampler quilt class. I either shocked or annoyed the teacher, I never was quite sure which, by choosing light grey, dark grey and black fabrics for this sampler. Everyone else in the class used the more “normal” colours that were popular around the time of Y2K. The teacher kept pressing me to add a pop of colour to my quilt and finally I agreed to do a narrow red flange border. Part of me really wishes I’d used white and not red but the red isn’t bad.
During the class the quilt top was finished and started quilting it. But the quilt was aside and became a UFO. So, for about about 20 years it sat partially quilted. I finally picked it up earlier this month and quilted whatever bits had not yet been quilted. That really didn’t take long.
It was finished off with a simple black binding which was machine sewn on the front and the back. Can you tell I wanted this to get off of the to do list?
Not sure what I’m going to do with it but I’m happy that it has been finished.
it looks like you were ahead of your time. it is very striking
I love your sampler quilt! So great that you stuck with your plan of gray, black, and white. I like the red flange, but I’m sorry that the teacher pushed you to add color you didn’t really want to add. Congratulations on finishing it!
Congrats on finishing up this UFO!! I really like your color choices (and the teacher’s suggested POP! of color, too.) I have a 20 year-old project on my list of quilts waiting to be finished. Seeing your freshly completed quilt makes me SEW jealous (since I have been unable to gather enthusiasm for my own languishing project!)
Very nice quilt! Congrats on finishing a 20 year old UFO! And good job following your own vision, even when your teacher didn’t share it. That might be the best lesson of all.
I agree with Maggie. Your black and white quilt looks very trendy and modern. Interesting isn’t that. So nice to have it all finished off now. Happy Stitching from me!
I’ve recently completed a 20 year old quilt too, you know what they say, “Good things take time”.
Your sampler quilt looks very modern in that colour range, well done.
I think we are all in agreement that you were ahead of your time with the color palette! The real amazement is that you picked up a 20 year old WIP and actually finished it. I don’t think I would or could ever do that!
Great finish! I am sorry that the teacher pressured you into something you weren’t happy with. Not cool!
Congratulations on your finish! I have a couple 20 year old UFOs. I still have a couple months to finish them before they become 21 years old LOL.
What a fun quilt. I love how it came out. I also like the red flange – but what a shame you were asked to change your vision.
Well, I guess it’s a newly finished vintage quilt! And it’s a beauty too. Good for you for finishing it up. Sounds like I’m glad I never took any quilting classes.
This is gorgeous! That pop of red is lovely. Sorry that your teacher pushed you into it, but I like it a lot. Your first quilts are absolutely amazing. I think you were born to quilt.
Thanks for sharing on Wednesday Wait Loss.
That is kinda a modern looking sampler – who knew you were trendy so long ago. I personally like the red, I think it makes the Whites brighter
