Playing with my fabric scraps always makes me happy – so today was a very happy day!
I had started sewing hashtag blocks during my evenings this past week. I didn’t go crazy but made a couple each night. Today while attending a virtual guild sew in and a online sew-in I sewed the blocks together.
The hash tag blocks are ten inches finished and the sashing is an inch and a half finished. It’s not that big of a quilt top and definitely needs borders. I am waffling back and forth between a grey border or a grey inner border and dark blue or red outer border. Either way I go it will make a nice wheelchair or baby quilt.
I also quilted a small quilt today made from fabric scraps. It’s the same pattern as the quilt I call my ugly quilt.
While I like the “ugly quilt” a lot more now it’s finished I still am not 100% thrilled with it. Still, I love the concept. So I started another version with fabric scraps in greys and brights near the end of last year. I didn’t take a picture of just the top before it was quilted. Here however, is the quilted top:
While I’m still learning free motion quilting I am happier with the quilting on this one than I thought I would be. I quilted lazy loops over the top for the most part. My movements were less jerky than before and I felt like I had more control over the process. The more I practise the more comfortable I become. Isn’t that always the way?
I’m contemplating either binding this in the grey fabric or taking a scrappy approach to the binding. For the moment I’m undecided. However, the decision won’t be made tonight. Tomorrow is another day!
I do so love this quilt! Although I prefer the gray, the blue is NOT ugly. One question: do you sew strip sets or make the blocks, one square at a time?
love your quilts they are bright and beautiful and for sure you did a great job with the quilting.
Love the scrappy with white! And I am always great with my free motion quilting by the END of the quilt. Seems like I start over with every quilt! Someday I will get there and start where I finish!!
Stay safe and Sew on!!
Such a great stashbuster quilt and it always seems to make all the fabrics go together so well. Your quilting is looking great! Everything is better with practice, and those smaller sized quilts give you lots of room to play without having to wrestle fabric.
I have tons of 2″ squares I need to just start sewing together and make some kind of blocks. And then I will have blanks I can use to practice my FMQ too! I am confident with ruler work, but not so much free hand. Your projects are wonderful.
I love your scrappy quilts – they are never ugly! I guess we do have to watch placement of fabrics for value even when we’re sewing scraps together in a kind random way, though. No matter what, your designs with the 16 patches and framed 4 patches are really happy!
Fun hashtag blocks, they look good with the sashing. Both scrappy quilts are lovely, maybe the blue one has less contrast than the grey, but both are beautiful, and it’s fun to look at all the little squares.
Thank youfor linking up today!
I love what you are doing with your scraps. Thanks for sharing with Oh Scrap!
I think your scrappy quilts are wonderful. I started a “Bricks and Strips” one after seeing your in January. And, yes, you will get more comfortable with free motion quilting the more you did it. It’s a matter of building some muscle memory and staying relaxed as you quilt. Thanks for the impsiration.
Great scrappy quilts getting done in your studio!!!
Happy times indeed. Your ugly quilt is NOT ugly and I am glad it’s growing on you. I have a bunch of 2″ squares and have been enjoying seeing hashtag blocks so much… You know where my thought process is going right? Thank you for linking up to Put your foot down.
The gray real makes the colours shine, such a nat idea!
Great scrappy quilts!
There is nothing ugly about any of your quilts. I love scrappy. The hashtag quilt looks like fun. This block pattern is on my to-do list. I think I would do a gray and then a red border and bind it is dark blue. Anyway you finish it, will work well. Thank you for sharing your lovely quilts in my linky party and brightening my quilty week ,,, <3 Pat
I love your scrappy quilts. They’re just so bright and happy.
Your hashtag quilt is coming along really nicely and I look forward to seeing how you decide to finish it 🙂
Well I love the idea of using those scraps and I don’t see ugly but 2 great quilts!!!
I found an appreciation for gray when I made my zipped kitties quilt.
Great quilts and even greater quilting! And I agree with other comments… neither is ugly. 🙂
That hashtag is so cute!!! You could even use a bright color like gold as an inner border? and your Ugly quilts – I don’t think they are ugly – I rather like them!!!
Both are really cute. I haven’t tried a hash tag quilt but it looks like an easy graphic design.
Great scrap busting quilts. Good progress on the hashtag quilt.
Definitely not an ugly quilt! So proud of your quilting…it’s really improving! That Hashtag quilt is sure cute and what a great way to use up scraps. I bet it was fun to sew virtually with your guild. Thanks for sharing on Wednesday Wait Loss.
Hi! I’m really glad that you’re getting comfortable with free motion quilting. At one point, you may find that you are too comfortable and need to slow down – that’s where I’m at. Crazy but the practice really works. I don’t know if you practice doodling or drawing your FMQ design, but that really helped me, especially for designs that didn’t come naturally. Your second quilt is really lovely (as was your first!) Thanks so much for linking up to Free Motion Mavericks! Take care and stay warm…Ottawa had a real dump of snow and now it’s cold – hope Toronto got better weather.
