Zipper Quilt Part Deux

Posted on July 19, 2020January 11, 2021

Earlier this year I found some 2.5″ squares left over from another project and decided to make another zipper quilt. The first one I made was with a tropical colours and a white background.

I changed up the second zipper quilt. While it was still scrappy,  I chose to make it with only five colours, yellow, orange, turquoise, pink and green. It looks so different than the first one, at least to me.

I see the zipper more clearly in this one than I do in the first one I made.

This crib sized quilt has been quilted for someone but only got bound this weekend after my bolt of Northcott Colorworks black fabric was delivered last week after about two moths of delays (thanks COVID). I had totally run out and needed it for the binding.

The backing is a piece of material I’ve had in my stash for a long time – more than a decade.  I was glad to find a good home for it on the back of this quilt. I’m not thrilled about how the black binding looks on the back – a bit to stark in my opinion but it’s done and done is better than perfect!

Beautiful! While I like them both, I agree, it is easier to see the zipper effect in the second version.

I really like your zipper quilt. It was smart to put the colors in columns like you did. Makes the colors pop against that black background! Thanks for linking to MCM.

That zippery looking Zipper quilt looks terrific. I love how graphic it looks. Yea for using an old fabric. And, bonus, it looks so good with the front. The binding doesn’t bother me. I’m not sure what you could have used instead of the black. Wait, you could have made binding from strips of different fabric…. nah, I like the black better!

It’s always fun to see how changing the fabrics changes the quilt. You’ve got 2 great looking quilts.

It’s amazing how different they look! I think I love this one just a tiny bit more although the original is gorgeous. Thanks for sharing on Wednesday Wait Loss.

They are both great, but have to say I like your original version best. Although the one with black is really graphic and certainly shows the zippers. Well done on both versions s, just goes to show what a big difference changing colour does make

Both quilts are just great! The colors in columns definitely says Zipper! The one with scattered colors makes me think of Tropical Fruit Salad! I’m weird!

To see the zipper effect more readily add a solid color background strip between the zips. The black ground quilt is quite dramatic. Very nice.
