What else to do when you have a pile of bricks (2.5″ x 4.5″ squares) leftover from other projects other than make a colorful bricks and strips quilt?
I made a zipper quilt last February as well as a Bonnie Hunter Star Struck quilt during the summer. Both projects used bricks.
After making those quilts, wow, did I ever have lot of bricks leftover! I thought initially of making the Star Struck quilt bed sized and cut out enough bricks for that . Of course I changed direction and it became a large lap quilt instead.
One day recently when puttering about in the sewing room I saw the box of colorful bricks. There was also a large pile of primarily black 2.5″ strips in the stripbox that needed to be used in something. I donned my thinking cap and I thought about making a quilt top combining both of them? Here are my first blocks laid out:
I wasn’t sure but kept sewing anyway as I liked the concept. Hubby made it clear that the concept wasn’t working for him.
Here is the bricks and strips quilt top:
It’s sitting unquilted in a pile of quilt tops. Holding me back quilting it is what to use for backing. There are fabrics in my stash that are suitable but none are the perfect size. I know silly – but I dislike using a larger piece of fabric than needed for a backing. That really sounds silly now it’s written out. I really should just get over it, pick a material to back it with and quilt it.
Quilting this will make a great project for tomorrow. A break from the scrappy bear claw blocks I’ve been making is just the ticket! This will definitely give me a necessary break from that project.
What colorful tops! I usually piece backs to use up leftover fabrics from the front. I need to start collecting backings to use just for backings.
I think this is the perfect quilt for the leftover brick blocks! So bright and beautiful!
I don’t agree with Hubby. . .Such a bright and happy combination of fabrics. Your setting is perfect!
Colorful pretty tops! I like the scrappy one … even tho it doesn’t work for hubby – I still like it haha!! The appropriate backing will show itself soon Ihope!
Great use of those leftover pieces. It is so bright and happy. Thanks for sharing with Oh Scrap!
Super cute use of those extra pieces!! Hmm… I need to remember this when I get thru my current stack of projects. I’m pretty sure there’s a drawer full of bricks in my studio!
Great ideas to just keep sewing and use them up.
/well, you’ve just given me an idea for one of my quilts for Sarah’s (Confessions of a Fabric Addict) Hands2Help project. It will make a fun kids donation quilt, but I also might try it with a bunch of leftover florals that are just sitting there waiting for inspiration.
Bright and beautiful quilt, I love how the pattern shows the fabrics. Well done!
Thank you for sharing!
Suh cheerful quilts. Great to snuggle under with a cup of hot beverage on a winter day.
I love your cheerful bricks! Ah, husbands and their opinions… Your husband’s opinions about quilting remind me of MY husband’s opinions about women’s fashion. 😉
Wonderful use of leftover bricks and strips. Sew easy to do. I like to find the right size piece of fabrics for backing, too, rather than cut from a larger piece. Sometimes I find it easier to just cut what I need for yardage. I also like pieced backings. Depends on the current mood of my quilty muse. Thanks for linking up today and joining my circle of online quilty friends … 🙂 Pat
So much cheery colour here!
Oh so fun and bright, some child will love to snuggle under this quilt.
I love scrappy and I could sure see doing these from my scraps.
I’ve only done one braid quilt and loved it….not sure why I’ve not gotten around to making another one yet.
Your use of the bricks and strips produced a great quilt top. I love how the black strips really make the colors pop.
What a colorful quilts you’ve made!! Well done!!
Well, since this quilt is not for hubby, and it is making you and me and many others happy, I’d consider him outvoted. Sorry hubby. 😀 Love your bright quilt top and I am sure the eventual recipient will too. I can understand the need for a break from the more complicated bears paws, this seems perfect to me.
Very clever use of your scraps! Yes, I would quilt this now while your thoughts are on it. Can’t wait to see what you do. Thanks for sharing on Wednesday Wait Loss.
Hi! I really love your latest brick quilt. I think that the black really helps ground it and makes the rest of the colours pop. It’s going to be a lovely quilt when it gets quilted…good luck! Thanks for linking up to Free Motion Mavericks. Take care.
